Big week in North America for ZipThaw

It’s been a big week across North America for ZipThaw. FMS leadership met with our manufacturer, Minnetronix, in St Paul MN, to review production and shipments of ZipThaw. At the same time, our distributor, GenesisBPS, presents ZipThaw to prospective buyers ISCT 2024 in Vancouver, Canada. Enjoy the photos:

ZipThaw is FDA cleared, CE Mark, and more

People often ask if ZipThaw is FDA approved. Medical devices are “cleared” while pharmaceuticals are “approved” by the FDA. ZipThaw is FDA 510k cleared as a class 2 medical device. ZipThaw also has CE Mark and MDR compliance, which means it can be used in the European Union (EU).  ZipThaw also has received ISO 13485 and UL authorization, among other compliance standards, which is a way of determining safety for electronic devices.

Lastly, ZipThaw is rated as AABB Standards-Compliant, which is the premier blood banking industry association and offers additional product compliance standards. This program was called SCOPE and has been renamed. More on AABB standards here.

Not all plasma thawing devices — almost all of which are water baths — have FDA clearance. ZipThaw has FDA clearance as well as a long list of other standards compliances. ZipThaw is an effective, fast, dry, portable and nearly maintenance free medical device for rapid plasma thawing. There is no water to clean with toxic chemicals. It has a handle, simply pick it up to move it. For a quote, email

Save Energy with ZipThaw

ZipThaw is a portable, dry, precise, and fast way to thaw plasma and blood products. It’s also energy efficient. ZipThaw goes from ambient to full thawing temperature in about 7 minutes using only 104 Watt-Hrs. If ZipThaw is set to the ready-to-use mode, energy use is only 125 Watt-Hrs.

At peak power, with its two thawing chambers running, ZipThaw only draws a maximum of 900 watts — less than a portable hair dryer set to low — and only for a few minutes during the thaw cycle.

Are your lab circuits maxed out? ZipThaw will never draw enough power to create a circuit overload.

Traditional wet thawing devices with circulating water at 37°C pull a significant amount of energy: 6-to-8X the energy consumption of ZipThaw.

ZipThaw’s small footprint and low maintenance also makes it a good choice for blood banks with tight space. ZipThaw has no circulating water that needs weekly changing and algaecides — and it doesn’t need to be near a sink.

ZipThaw can sit quietly in Idle or Stand-By mode and minimize power consumption while always being ready. ZipThaw can also be tucked safely under the bench, then plugged in and ready to go in minutes.

Blood Banks concerned about space constraints, energy and maintenance — use ZipThaw to deliver optimal thawing with minimal space, energy and maintenance.

Welcome CEO Lersch and COO Wolf

It’s been a big few weeks at FreMon Scientific. ZipThaw sales continue to reach more and more blood banks and clinics, and we’re excited to welcome two new leaders to the FMS team: CEO Jeff Lersch and COO Andrew Wolf.

ZipThaw on board with the US Navy

ZipThaw, a next gen plasma thawing medical device, is installed on more and more US Navy warships like the USS Bataan. ZipThaw, and disposable ZipSleeves, serve those who serve America. We’re doing our part to save lives with ZipThaw’s quick and precise technology to thaw plasma and blood products with minimal energy consumption and maximal ease-of-use.

Becoming the choice of many ships, military hospitals and VA facilities, ZipThaw changes the way blood products are thawed. The completely dry ZipThaw process eliminates cumbersome water baths which require weekly maintenance, significant power consumption and can’t be easily moved. This makes ZipThaw the go-to device for accuracy and rapid thawing.

FDA cleared. AABB Scope certified. Manufactured in the USA. Company co-founded by a Vietnam War combat veteran. Can be found on ECAT and GSA through GSS. Contact us to learn more

ZipThaw onboard the USS Batan and USS Mesa Verde

ZipThaw is widely used by the US Armed Forces at home and abroad. Currently in the Mediterranean, the USS Bataan and USS Mesa Verde are equipped with ZipThaw for thawing and warming plasma and other blood products.

ZipThaw uses dry thawing technology — this gives it a small footprint and portability which are perfect for ships with tight spaces. And since ZipThaw is both precise and fast, the military can count on quick and quality blood thawing for service members.

Veterinary and AABB Shows

We’re excited to demonstrate ZipThaw at trade shows this fall. Come by our booths to see portable, next gen plasma thawing. If you’re not at the shows, please email us for a virtual demonstration.
In early September we’ll demonstrate ZipThaw at IVECCS, the International Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Symposium, in Colorado Sept 7 – 11. Pets need lifesaving plasma too. ZipThaw is ideal for Emergency Veterinary use because it has a small footprint, it’s portable, precise and dry. Staff also love that ZipThaw is maintenance free. Booth 914.

Then in October 14-17 we’ll be at the AABB in Nashville. This is always a great show and we’re excited to be back in person. You can check out ZipThaw and ZipSleeve at our booth for live demonstrations.

ZipThaw Goes Global

Friends, we emailed this notice yesterday to our list and received a lot of positive feedback, so we’re reposting it to our blog.

ZipThaw Goes Global

ZipThaw is becoming the choice of hospitals for thawing and warming blood products, not only nationwide, but worldwide. ZipThaw, along with the ZipSleeve disposable, is now installed in nearly 200 locations, from the Midwest to the Middle East.

Trauma centers, critical access hospitals, US Navy ships, veterinary emergency hospitals, research labs, VA hospitals, other military facilities and university hospitals now use ZipThaw’s updated technology to more easily and cheaply thaw frozen plasma. ZipThaw is dry, portable, precise and quick.

The FDA cleared, AABB Scope certified device gains market share each month. We welcome Malaysia into our family of countries now importing ZipThaw.

Improve Staff Productivity

ZipThaw is a blood product thawer that uses revolutionary dry technology to quickly thaw blood products for patients in need. ZipThaw is dry, so there’s no messes like with water baths, and fast, so you can increase your thawed plasma throughput — it’s also easy for staffers to use. With simple thawing, staffers can spend their time elsewhere on other critical tasks.

Last generation water bath thawers require enormous amounts of staff time to prep, use and continually decontaminate the devices. Circulated water gets dirty fast. With ZipThaw, there’s a disposable ZipSleeve that both protects the device and assists rapid thawing. If there’s ever a blood product bag leak, simply toss out the ZipSleeve. The device stays untouched. Staffers can move on to other things.

Generally, ZipThaw maintenance is as simple as wiping the device off from time to time, and replacing the heating cushions once or twice a year — a five-minute process done by a staffer, on site. This is less than an hour of maintenance per year, versus many long hours per week with hot water baths.
